Check out some of Darius Rucker's favorite things to do in Columbia.

Outdoor adventure is a way of life for South Carolina’s capital city. Located in the heart of the Palmetto State where the Saluda and Broad rivers converge to form the wild Congaree, Columbia offers an abundance of sporting and recreational fun. From exploring Columbia’s fascinating historic sites to whitewater rafting down the Saluda River or tailgating at a University of South Carolina football game, there’s no shortage of things to do while you’re here.

Stay

Hotel Trundle is a beautiful boutique hotel located in the heart of the city.

Whether you’re looking for a dog-friendly hotel, a full-service property with luxury amenities or a campsite at Sesquicentennial State Park, there are plenty of lodging options available in Columbia.

Located in downtown’s Main Street district, Hotel Trundle is Columbia’s newest boutique hotel. The hotel’s 41 rooms span three half-century-old buildings on Taylor and Sumter streets, which used to house a Western Auto, Powell Furniture and the Rose Talbert paint store. Everything from tin ceilings to garage door remnants have been incorporated into the rooms, making Hotel Trundle a testament to Columbia’s history. With a unique blend of curated guest experiences and services, Hotel Trundle is a great place to rest your head during your stay.

Tailgating is way of life in South Carolina and a fun way to spend time with family and friends.

Outdoor adventure is part of the culture in Columbia and visitors don’t have to go far to escape the bustle of city life. Whether teeing off at a variety of golf courses, zip lining at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden or floating down the Saluda River, there’s an abundance of sporting and recreational fun at your fingertips.

A proud graduate of USC, Darius Rucker still enjoys the game-day tradition of tailgating at Gamecock football games—and he’s not the only one. Tailgating is so popular, it’s even possible to pay for a turnkey experience, complete with tent, chairs, cooler and catering. With live music on-site, sponsored giveaways and interactive games, even non-football fans enjoy the full gameday experience.

Aside from a good game of golf, one of Rucker’s favorite ways to unwind is a day on the boat with his buddies. At 55,000-acres, Lake Murray is South Carolina’s third largest lake and is widely known for its fishing and boating. In addition to being a boater’s paradise, Lake Murray is home to some of the most majestic wildlife in South Carolina, including millions of migrating purple martins each summer.

Dine

Make sure you bring your appetite with you when you visit South Carolina’s capital.

Considered one of South Carolina’s premier culinary cities, Columbia’s restaurant scene reflects the diverse culture of the city. Enjoy classic southern dishes like shrimp and grits at Blue Marlin or head to Halls Chophouse for a hand-selected, hand-cut steak cooked to perfection.

Savage Craft Ale Works, a premier craft beer destination in West Columbia, is an ideal place to unwind and savor a variety of craft brews. Soak in the views from the rooftop or grab some food and head outside to the beer garden, where you can sit by the fire pit and enjoy live music while the kids play a round of cornhole. Best of all, this alehouse is family-friendly.

The Congaree Vista is one of Columbia’s most vibrant arts, dining and entertainment districts. Made up of renovated warehouses, the Vista is home to over 45 restaurants and bars, 60 artists’ galleries, specialty shops and a diverse mix of businesses. A center of activity, the Vista’s energetic and eclectic vibe attracts locals and visitors alike.
