Here’s something I learned recently: Duncan Sheik
, the singer/songwriter who became a household name in the 1990s, was partially raised on Hilton Head Island
. Apparently he lived with his grandparents for a time before entering Phillips Academy at Andover, and his grandmother was a Julliard-trained pianist. That was my “oh wow!” trivia for the day.
Sheik has been very busy from his New York base in the past couple of years. Since his 1990s hit “Barely Breathing,” he has established and maintained a close collaboration with the Broadway community. His 2001 album Phantom Moon came out of a collaboration with New York playwright Steven Sater, and in 2007 he won a Grammy Award and a Tony Award for his work on the show, “Spring Awakening.” He comes to Hilton Head
shortly after the release of “Lay Down Your Weapons,” a song that has been a staple in his live shows for some time.
The musician dubbed “Hilton Head’s own” will be returning to the beautiful sneaker-shaped island April 6 for the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina Spring Gala
, where he will join Broadway performer Meredith Inglesby
(who also is also from Hilton Head) and her husband, Steve Blanchard
, who is known for his role as The Beast in “Beauty and the Beast.”
The gala begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception. Once the dapperly dressed guests have enjoyed their hors d’oeuvres and cocktails they will enjoy an exclusive live performance from Sheik, as well as from the husband and wife who are well known throughout Broadway circles. Proceeds from the gala go to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, which produces musicals, comedies, and dramas in its main venue that houses a 349-seat theater and a black box venue for youth and experimental theater. The Arts Center also houses an art gallery and presents education programs, community festivals, and presentations involving music and dance.
Tickets for the gala are $125 and $175. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call (843) 686-3945, ext. 306.
