Peace Center kicks off its 20th year

Greenville’s Peace Center has just released the schedule for its star-studded 20th anniversary season.

On Sept. 8, superstar Liza Minnelli will take the stage. In show business parlance Minnelli is a triple-threat; she can sing, she can dance and she can act. In fact, she is one of just 10 people who have won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy and a Tony. But if you want to see her in person, you’ll have to hurry; tickets are selling out fast.

Minnelli is just one of the diverse collection of musical greats who will be gracing the Peace Center’s stage this year. On Sept. 1, singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant formerly of the group 10,000 Maniacs, will perform. In October, award-winning, Grammy-nominated Mercy Me will be on hand with its brand of inspirational Christian pop.

Country fans also will be pleased with the Peace Center’s line up. Country Hall-of-Famer Emmylou Harris, known for her talent both as a singer-songwriter and as a master interpreter of other people’s songs, plays the center on Nov. 21. Also playing Greenville will be South Carolina native Darius Rucker. Rucker, formerly of Hootie and the Blowfish, has forged a successful new solo career as a country artist and has been named the Country Music Association’s “New Artist of the Year.”

The Peace Center is a cherished Greenville institution. The idea for the complex was born in the 1980s as part of an effort to revive Greenville’s downtown. Thanks to donations by the local Peace family, Dorothy Hipp Gunter and others across the community, the Peace Center opened in 1990. Three historic buildings, the Coach Factory, C.F. Sauer’s (Duke’s Mayonnaise) Factory, and an old Huguenot millworks were purchased, renovated and integrated into the design of the center. Today the Peace Center is a vital part of Greenville’s thriving downtown, which is filled with businesses, cultural venues, shops and restaurants.
