Come watch animal enrichment at Riverbanks

Posted 9/23/2011 1:05:00 PM

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia will be treating its animals to some fun and unusual treats on Sunday as part of fall Enrichment Day.

Bears, gorillas, lions, elephants and other zoo animals will be given unusual objects to play with. These objects range from new food choices, edible papier-mâché creations, puzzle feeders and more. They’re designed to stimulate and enrich the animals’ senses and encourage natural behavior.

There also will be special activities for kids, with temporary tattoos, arts and crafts and the opportunity to see animals up close. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and events are free with paid zoo admission.

Here’s the schedule of enrichment encounters:

10 a.m. – Lions
10:30 a.m. – Galapagos tortoises

11:30 a.m. – Gorillas
