Grande Dunes Resort: Golf Insider’s new ratings system has new No. 1

For years, golfers planning their winter/spring escapes to the Myrtle Beach area have known about the Myrtle Beach Golf Insider, which has produced monthly top-25 rankings of area courses. For 2013, though, Golf Insider – which uses thousands of ratings and reviews from Grand Strand visitors to compile those rankings of 76 courses – has rolled out its first “Hot List” of courses.

The inaugural winner: Grande Dunes Resort Club, which tops the new 25 best courses listing. The rest of the Best Five are, in order, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club; the Love Course at Barefoot Resort; True Blue Plantation; and King’s North at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club.

Courses on the Hot List are evaluated based on the most recent 30 reviews of each course, done on a 1-10 scale with 10 being the highest score, rather than on reviews dating back further. The idea, Golf Insider editor Jim Maggio said, is to “reflect a factor that is especially important to today’s traveling golfer: (a) course’s current trend.”

Grande Dunes Resort earned a 9.2 rating, edging Caledonia (9.1), Barefoot/Love (9.0), True Blue (8.9) and King’s North (8.8). Five other courses – Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club, Heather Glen Golf Links, Barefoot Resort’s Fazio course, Litchfield’s River Club and Arrowhead Golf Club – also earned 8.8 ratings; total historic review ratings were used to break ties, Maggio said.

Other courses rated at 8.0 or above include Man O’ War, TPC Myrtle Beach and Wilbrook Plantation (all 8.6); Pine Lakes (8.5); The Witch, Myrtlewood Palmetto, Wild Wing/Avocet, Tradition Club and Waterway Hills (all 8.4); Myrtle Beach National South Creek, Myrtle Beach National West and Blackmoor (all 8.3); and Litchfield Country Club and Long Bay Club (both 8.2).
