If past golf, vacation and/or business travels have taken you to the greater Charlotte area (including Rock Hill, York and Fort Mill), you likely already know there’s great golf all over. But you might not realize just how many courses are available to the visiting player – and how many of them are in South Carolina.
You can drive around, ask friends, search online – or, easiest of all, use Click-It Golf’s website
. While primarily for golf courses on the other side of the state line, the website has listings – and, better yet, a number of online discount coupons/deals – for some 15 South Carolina courses, too.
You might even find a course you never knew about. Take, for instance, Carolina Crossing Golf Course in York. Built in 1970 as a nine-hole layout and expanded to 18 holes in 1972, the former Carolina Downs Country Club – named for the late architect/owner Gerald Downs, who designed it to replicate a course he saw while traveling in Japan – was bought by Downs’ widow and opened to the public in 2004.
A renovation replaced all existing bunkers and added 11, removed trees to open up fairways, and spiffed up the clubhouse and grill room. The park-style course features rolling terrain over a short-but-challenging 6,300 yards (back tees) and par 72.
The prices are right, too: Coupons at the Click-It Golf site offer a weekday foursome for $108, $115 Fridays and $120 weekends. Seniors can play for $20 Monday-Thursday and $22 Fridays. Call (803) 684-5878.
Other S.C. courses listed on the site include Carolina Lakes (Indian Land), a new Tim Freeland design near Charlotte’s Ballantyne area with bent grass greens and 7,024 yards/par 72; Edgewater Golf Club near Lancaster, a hilly, fun design operated by Fuzzy Zoeller Golf; Fort Mill’s acclaimed Springfield Golf Club, built by Clyde Johnston; and Fort Mill Golf Club, a Donald Ross/George Cobb design.
Others: Regent Park GC (Fort Mill), Tega Cay GC, Pinetuck GC (Rock Hill), Chester GC, Lancaster GC, Cheraw Country Club, Cheraw State Park GC, Kershaw CC and Spring Lake GC (York). To check locations and prices, as well as to sign up for email alerts, go to www.clickitgolf.com
