Spring fling: RBC Heritage 2014 seeking golf tournament volunteers

April 2014 might seem like a long time away, but for the folks in charge of staging the RBC Heritage, South Carolina’s lone annual PGA Tour event and one of the state’s premier happenings each year, it’s never too early to get organized – particularly when it comes to locating the dozens of volunteers needed each spring.

If you’ve never attended the RBC Heritage or always wondered about the inner workings of a PGA Tour event, this is your chance. Volunteers are being sought to work as marshals, in tournament player transportation, Shotlink Laser, walking scorers (who go 18 holes with a threesome of players each day) and courtesy shuttles.

The golf tournament, staged at Hilton Head’s Harbour Town Golf Links every year since 1969, has already held a pair of meetings for volunteers from Beaufort County. But volunteers are welcome from everywhere in South Carolina, said tournament spokesperson Angela McSwain.

“We prefer them to be local, but we can always make exceptions,” she said. Interested applicants preferably live within one hour, 30 minutes of Hilton Head and agree to work a minimum of 16 hours during the tournament.

Volunteers pay a $100 registration fee, which include uniform hat, jacket and shirt, tournament badge for the week, four meal tickets (redeemable at all concession stands) and preferred parking and shuttle transportation during the tournament. Volunteers may also purchase up to four weekly badges at a discounted price of $75.

A meeting for volunteers who are residents of the Sun City retirement community is set for Nov. 20 from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Pinckney Hall’s Colleton River Room inside Sun City. Also on Nov. 20, two workshop sessions for 501 (c)(3) non-profit groups wanting to be involved in 2014 charitable giving programs with the Heritage Classic Foundation will be held at 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., at the Sea Pines Resort offices at 71 Lighthouse Road, Hilton Head.
