Most underrated: Grande Dunes Resort’s 14th hole gets love from Golf magazine

Golf magazine travel writer Joe Passov stays busy, and in the fall of 2013, his hectic schedule apparently led him to Myrtle Beach more than a few times. In the magazine’s November issue, he profiled The Dunes Golf & Beach Club following a summer renovation, and in the December issue, he declares Grande Dunes Resort’s par-3 14th hole as the “Most Underrated Hole (Myrtle Beach Division).”

The award, one of 10 conferred by Passov, honors the 220-yard hole, which runs along the Grand Strand’s Intracoastal Waterway with water hugging the hole’s entire right side. Among his descriptions of the golf courses are “pulse-quickening” (the 14th hole) and “impressive” (his assessment of the handiwork of architect Roger Rulewich, noted for his work on PGA Championship courses around the country).

Passov visited Grande Dunes in August, and the “most underrated” award was one of 10 listed in his annual “Travelin’ Joe Awards” column.

“It’s a nice honor from someone who plays the best courses throughout the world,” said Bob Mauragas, president of National Golf Management, which owns or manages 22 courses (including Grande Dunes) in the Grand Strand.
