Wintergreen Golf Escape: Enjoy Myrtle Beach’s best courses, accommodations

Posted 12/29/2013 9:08:00 PM

When it comes to golf in Myrtle Beach, few experts would dispute that True Blue Plantation and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, located near one another in Pawleys Island, are among the top handful of courses on the Grand Strand. Both consistently rank not only among the area’s best but also with the best in South Carolina and the nation’s public-access layouts.

So what’s better than playing both on the same trip? How about also staying at the Inlet Sports Lodge, located near the water in Murrells Inlet and within an easy drive of both courses? And doing so in December and/or January for a discounted price?

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday has teamed with the Inlet Sports Lodge to offer its “Wintergreen Golf Escape” package: through Jan. 27, 2014, stay two nights in a lodge studio room (double occupancy) and play a round of golf at each course, for $199 per person. Golf Holiday president Bill Golden says the Grand Strand’s “shoulder season” (winter to the rest of us) makes such low-cost deals possible – even if temperatures in the 60s-70s are frequent during those months.

Caledonia and True Blue, products of the fertile architectural imagination of the late Mike Strantz, are both challenging and visually gorgeous. Caledonia, 6,500 yards from the tips, is ranked 27th nationally in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 You Can Play” and third in South Carolina by Golf. True Blue, is included among Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.”

And the Inlet Sports Lodge is the ideal place to stay while enjoying both courses. A boutique-style, upscale resort, it features such touches as mahogany doors, pine floors and antique-style crown molding in rooms, as well as flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and complimentary wifi. Each studio has a kitchenette with refrigerator, stove and dishwasher, plus a living room with sofa and dining table. For a special treat, visit the rooftop “widow’s walk,” with its over-the-trees view of Murrells Inlet.
