Have shovel, will travel? Go east, young man, to the Hunting Island Sand Sculpting Contest being held from 1 to 4 p.m. July 27 at Hunting Island State Park
Create the classic castle or let your imagination run wild and sculpt whatever comes to mind — mermaid, dolphin, shark, Shar-pei. Enlist your family, friends or anyone you can dig up to help with your masterpiece and enter as a team or go it solo and sign up as an individual.
Either way, you will be allowed to use buckets, shovels, sand scoops, carving tools, putty knives, spray bottles for water, kitchen utensils, scrapers, strainers, rakes and natural materials found on or near the beach.
Winners will be chosen based on originality, composition and technique. Prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.
Even if you’re not the creative type, you’re welcome to watch the sculptors as they build their temporary works of art. For the entertainment pleasure of both artists and admirers, the Heritage Steel Band will be performing throughout the afternoon event.
The contest will be held on the beach near the historic Hunting Island
lighthouse. It doesn’t cost anything to enter the competition, but you’ll need to pay the entrance fee to the park. It’s $5 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6 to 15, and free for children 5 and younger.
