Campground Cookoff returns to Calhoun Falls State Park

Posted 9/10/2013 10:36:00 AM

I’m licking my chops just thinking about what awaits me the weekend of Sept. 20-22 at Calhoun Falls State Park. Once again this year, I’ve been invited to serve as a judge at the South Carolina Campground Cookoff, the culinary equivalent of the James Beard Awards for amateur outdoor chefs.

This is no beans-and-weenies affair. I’m talking the likes of Beef Wellington, stuffed tenderloin, Turkish köfte and apple sage pork chops, plus a selection of decadent desserts that will put pounds on your hips just looking at them.

What makes this cooking contest truly amazing is that everything is prepared over a campfire using logs, wood chips or charcoal. I will be one of three “celebrity” judges to rate the dishes based on smell, taste, creativity and presentation. Winners will earn bragging rights and cash prizes.

Along with the gastronomic competition, the event will include an Iron Skillet Hoedown with live entertainment from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, a park parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, a campsite decorating contest and silent auction.

Start working on your best campground recipes now. I’m coming hungry!
