Eater Charleston recently released its picks for essential Charleston restaurants. Restaurants deemed essential were, according to Eater Charleston, “the places that you think of when you think of Charleston. Not necessarily the newest and hottest on the block, but the classics.”

1. Poe’s Tavern for delicious burgers

2. Peninsula Grill for its famous coconut cake

3. Fat Hen for fresh, local food

4. Bowens Island Restaurant for excellent seafood in a very rustic spot

5. McCrady’s for its inventive cuisine

6. Martha Lou’s Kitchen for great Southern favorites like fried chicken and collard greens

7. Hank’s Seafood for excellent seafood

8. Oak Steakhouse for exceptional steaks

9. Jestine’s Kitchen for such favorites as pork chops, fried chicken and Coca-Cola cake

10. Charleston Grill for its elegant menu

11. The Glass Onion for combining the best of the Lowcountry and New Orleans
