Defending Carolina - Civil War Battlefields Tour

During the first months of 1865, Confederate forces readied themselves to defend against the invading army led by General William T. Sherman. As the army advanced toward Columbia, it had to cross well defended positions along several rivers. Join expert guides at two of these well preserved battlefields along the line of advance, at Rivers Bridge State Historic Site and at Congaree Creek. Well preserved earthworks at both sites will provide a better understanding of what the Union Army faced and how the Confederate defenders hoped to delay them. The program includes two nights in the lakeside cabins at Santee State Park, two guided battlefield tours, and transportation from Santee State Park to the sites and back. There will be walking involved at both field sites up to about a mile and it will also involve walking on uneven terrain through some wooded areas. Cost: $175/person double occupancy or $250/person single occupancy.
