Spartanburg Music Trail

The Spartanburg Music Trail honors 12 locals who have made a national or international impact in the world of music.

While Spartanburg has made many contributions to the wider world, nothing rivals the area of music. The Spartanburg Music Trail, which is be comprised of signage throughout downtown—as well as accompanying cell phone-audio tour—cements Spartanburg’s legacy as a place that launches musical careers in both popular and classical styles. It establishes this corner of the state as a birthplace of Ameri...can roots music—in particular, blues, jazz, country, gospel and bluegrass.

The first phase of the Spartanburg Music Trail spotlights these 12 musical artists, all deceased (or in the case of full bands, mostly deceased): Arthur Prysock (R&B); Ira Tucker of the Dixie Hummingbirds (Soul/Gospel); Clara Smith (Jazz); Singin’ Billy Walker (Sacred Harp Music); Marshall Tucker Band (Southern Rock); Pink Anderson (Piedmont Blues); Johnny Blowers (Big Band Music); Hank Garland (Country/Jazz); Champ Hood (Americana); Walter Hyatt (Americana); Don Reno (Bluegrass); and the Blue Ridge Quartet (Gospel).

The first twelve signs are along a six-block area stretching from the new RJ Rockers microbrewery, up Main through Morgan Square and north on Liberty Street, heading toward the Chapman Center.
