Charleston Tells Storytelling Festival

Enjoy the annual Charleston Tells Storytelling Festival in historic downtown Charleston. For 2017, the Festival will be a quarterly series of evening concerts with the first one on March 17, 2017 at the Main Library. As in past years, the Festival brings together some of the best national and local storytellers with performances that reminisce about the carefree days of childhood, showcase humorous slice of life moments and transport audiences to significant times in history. The first concert will feature the nationally renowned teller Reverend Robert Jones, Sr. He is a singer, storyteller and self-taught multi-instrumentalist. He uses folk, blues, spirituals and other American Roots music to champion the beauty and power of our shared culture. A lifelong Detroiter, Rev. Jones has been performing professionally for nearly 30 years for festivals, schools, civil rights organizations and churches. In his own words: “As much as I love this music for the way that it sounds, I love, even more, what this music can do. At its best, Roots music tells the truth, and it gives a voice to those who struggle to be heard otherwise. That is why I consider myself to be an activist. The tools of my activism are songs and stories, and I try to use those songs and stories, not just to entertain, but in service to my calling and my community, and to connect the generations that I am blessed to be born between.” Similar to listening to Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion or being entertained by a great comedian, Charleston Tells celebrates the art and historical importance of storytelling. The Festival, presented by Charleston County Public Library, blends the area’s Southern charm and rich heritage with a deep-rooted respect for oral history as a revered art form.
