Museum Of York County

Go on an African safari, explore the galaxy or discover your own backyard through the many exhibits at the Museum of York County. Come explore the cosmos in the newly-renovated Settlemyre Planetarium. It is the only planetarium in the Charlotte metro area that is fully digital! A view of the night sky is shown after each program, presenting the pristine Carolina skies with the Milky Way and a multitude of stars that can be viewed in the absence of light pollution. The Museum's permanent exhibitions depict landscapes and wildlife of the Carolina Piedmont from today to 600 years ago, when native people shared the abundance of the river, forest and prairies with bison, elk and wolves. In the naturalist center you can observe (and touch!) the extensive collection of over 1,500 natural history specimens and more than 200 mounted animals. Permanent exhibitions include the Carolina Piedmont Hall’s Landscapes and Lifeways: The Carolina Piedmont 600 Years Ago and Today. Compare the present landscape with the Piedmont of the 1400s, before European exploration and settlement. More than 200 mounted African animals and an outstanding collection of African artifacts provide unique learning opportunities. See an elephant, giraffe and lions in naturalistic settings as well as African masks, tools and musical instruments. Explore the stars and planets in an out-of-this-world experience at the Settlemyre Planetarium. The planetarium’s star projector and domed ceiling allow visitors to tour the solar system or voyage to the stars.
