Evidence indicates that Edisto Island was inhabited by Native Americans at least 4,000 years ago and is among the older historic settlements in South Carolina. Spanish settlement came in the 1500s followed by the English in the 1600s. The English cultivation of Sea Island cotton in the 1700s produced great wealth. Plantations and houses in Edisto Island, South Carolina - many on the National Register of Historic Places - are reminders of this period.
