We’ll Hook You Up With A Great Vacation
Columbia • Lake Murray, SC
We have 30 courses with open tee times! Come by boat and play Timberlake in Chapin, SC, is the only golf club on the shores of beautiful Lake Murray. Persimmon Hill Golf Club of Saluda, SC is another golf gem and was formed by local doctors in 1963. This public course lays claim to South Carolina’s longest Par 5 on Hole 18 boasting 630 yards and is referred to as the “Thrill on the Hill”. These are just a few of the many golf clubs in the Midlands that are worth the trip. Give us a call to get your group on our greens!
• ROADS LESS TRAVELED
On Lake Murray at night, the Purple Martins take flight! Like the massive flock of vacationers descending to South Carolina each summer, legions of satiny-feathered guests are drawn to our region. The sky gets dark and millions of Purple Martins fill the predawn skies each day, establishing seasonal digs at Lunch Island in the middle of Lake Murray. Lunch Island, once a practice bombing range for World War II plane crews, is the perfect spot for the birds to roost. By day they disperse to feed; at night they settle onto the island. Over a period of weeks, their numbers grow dramatically. You can view this “natural phenomenon,” the largest, natural, roosting sanctuary in North America when you visit during July and August. Come board a boat for an evening cruise and see this unique attraction.
This region is rich in agriculture history and offers visitors a variety of fresh produce in roadside markets. The same produce is offered on the menus in many of our Southern cuisine establishments. Like many other southern destinations, we have barbecue of all flavors throughout our four-county area.
• ARTS & CULTURE
Our region is thriving with entertainment…the Koger Center and the Colonial Life Arena attracts the most popular performing acts and Broadway shows. Throughout the year, local art groups perform in many community theaters and just down the road experience the restored Newberry Opera House. Newberry has created a town square offering shopping, dining and traveling shows year-round.
• THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Nature lovers can stay busy in this region! The Congaree National Park showcases the largest remnant of old-growth floodplain forest remaining on the continent and almost 3 miles of boardwalk trails. Regional parks, two state parks with hiking and biking trails and environmental centers, are perfect for learning. Our three rivers are full of water, fun and are a paddlers’ paradise with black water and white water for canoeing, kayakers, tubers and rafters.
The playground of the region, Lake Murray, boasts 650 miles of shoreline and the best bass fishing in the state! Just 20 minutes from downtown Columbia, Lake Murray is the regions largest recreation asset, from sailing to weekend jet skiing or taking in an evening of sunsets. Lake Murray offers cabins, quaint cottages and more for your next weekend getaway!
• FAMILY TRAVEL
We are the Capital of Museums! South Carolina’s State Museum offers 4 floors of the state’s treasured artifacts. EdVenture, home of the world’s largest kid, Eddie, is drawing national attention for this region. The Columbia Museum of Art fills 20,000 square feet, showcasing one of the largest collections of Baroque and Renaissance art in the southeast. The Lexington County museum takes you back to the 18th century and there are 8 more museums to explore. Our region is proud to be home of the Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Gardens. Breaking attendance records with 1 million visitors a year, the zoo features 2,000 animal species and a 70-acre Botanical Garden.
