Four Charleston food trucks make list of the nation’s best

Four of Charles​ton’s food trucks are among the best 101 in the country, according to The​ Daily Meal.

Diggity Doughn​uts came in highest in the rankings at No. 66. The others are Hello, My Na​m​e is BBQ at No. 93; To​kyo Crepes at No. 97; and Pot Kettl​e Black at No. 99.

Amberge Sloan drives the bright blue food truck known as Diggity Doughnuts, serving all natural, whole grain, egg-free and dairy-free doughnuts. On her website, she said her grandparents would buy doughnuts on weekends at a local bakery, and as an adult she began craving those special treats. All the ones she tried “just made my belly hurt,” she said, so she set out to learn to make them herself. She found her truck in late 2010 and soon took her treats on the road.

These are no ordinary doughnuts; They come in about 30 flavors, including blueberry lemonade, Bailey’s and coffee, coconut green curry, and champagne julep.

Hello, My Name is BBQ serves hearty barbecue sandwiches like beer-braised barbecue on brioche (top it with bacon, cole slaw, grilled jalapenos or lots of other things) and barbecue tacos. It’s owned by Ryner and Cody Burg, and I had the pleasure of meeting Cody when I found the Hello truck parked at one its regular spots, Charlesto​n Scooter Company about a year ago. In addition to enjoying a great barbecue sandwich, I heard his wonderful story of how he and his wife came up with the unusual name for the food truck. When their young daughter needed to take a jar of pickles to school and they didn’t have blank labels, she suggested using a “Hello, my name is” sticker. They did and wrote in pickles. They thought it was funny and it was the inspiration for the business name.

The Burgs also have a non-moving restaurant called Hello my Name is BBQ World Headquarters on Meeting Street.

I also was lucky enough to stop in at Tokyo Crepes in Folly Beach on a sizzling summer day, and co-owner Yukari Yucca had the perfect suggestion: one of the sweet crepes made with ice cream. It was so delicious and so refreshing. At Tokyo Crepes, they make the fresh crepe while you wait and then turn it into an amazing sweet or savory meal. The Mideast Miracle crepe is filled with falafel, feta cheese, spinach and homemade tzatziki sauce.

Pot Kettle Black calls itself a wayward bistro. Chef Jon Caton specializes in regional immigrant sandwiches and soups, including dipped Italian beefs and muffulettas.
