Who – William McGirt is a PGA Tour player and a North Carolina native who now lives in Boiling Springs, near Spartanburg. He played on the Wofford College golf team and won the PGA Tour’s 2016 Memorial Tournament Presented by Nationwide – Jack Nicklaus’ tournament.
McGirt’s favorite SC dish – “The best thing I ever had in South Carolina is the vegetable plate at Wade’s Restaurant in Spartanburg.”
What makes it special – “A lot of times I go in and get the hamburger steak, but my favorite is to go in and get the sweet potato souffle, green beans, macaroni and cheese, (which) is to die for, and then I rotate between fried okra or rice and gravy. They don’t always have okra every day. I’m not a vegetarian at all, and I love their hamburger steak. But I’ll throw it a curve ball every now and then, and usually when we walk in, we got there so often, the waitress will walk up and say, “the usual?” I’ll top it off with the yeast rolls they have and sweet tea. Then I go straight back to the couch for an hour.”
What the chef says – Wade Lindsey, owner and cook: “William and his family come here after almost every (PGA Tour) tournament. The food on the vegetable plate isn’t specific items, because we offer 18 sides and rotate them every day. You can choose four sides on the plate. We keep it simple, and all our items are from my grandmother’s recipes, all made from scratch, like she did – the old-fashioned way. We make sure it’s quality food.”
