Town of Sullivan's Island

On June 28, 1776 Fort Moultrie, on the island's south-western shore, withstood British bombardment. Edgar Allen Poe was stationed here from 1827 to 1828, and the island was the setting of his short story The Gold Bug. The Sullivan's Island lighthouse was built in 1962. The 140-foot-tall building boasts an elevator instead of the typical spiral staircase.
