Woodrow Wilson Family Home

At South Carolina’s only presidential site, the Woodrow Wilson Family Home’s exhibit galleries and period vignettes delve into the Reconstruction era (1865-1877) in the only home owned by the parents of “Tommy” Woodrow Wilson, who became the 28th president of the United States. This is the only museum in the country to focus solely on the Reconstruction era. Visitors are immersed in the context of Columbia in the 1870s as they explore how Columbia’s residents, both black and white, navigated the profound political, social and economic changes of Reconstruction. Through panel exhibits, interactive technologies and guided tours, the museum offers opportunities for visitors to engage in meaningful conversation about the changing meanings of citizenship over the past 150 years. Outside, the Victorian garden is separated into the formal front yard and working back yard, including vegetable and flower beds, crepe myrtle, cherry laurel, hackberry, tea olive, magnolia and dogwood.
