The South Carolina Department of Archives and History preserves and promotes the documentary and cultural heritage of the Palmetto State. It houses one of the most comprehensive state archival collections in the nation, spanning more than 325 years of South Carolina history. Historical and genealogical research, exhibits, special programs and educational opportunities are available. Visit the J. Verne Smith exhibit gallery, gift shop and Carolina Garden. Group tours are available by appointment. The Reference Room is open Tuesday – Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Staff members are available during those times to assist with research requests.
