Fishing Trips at Santee State Park

Santee State Park is most famous for two things: its great freshwater fishing spots and the breathtaking outdoor beauty that comes with them. So whether you’re looking for your next big catch or you simply want to cast some lines with good company in the great outdoors, Santee State Park is the perfect spot for your next fishing trip.

Sitting on the shores of South Carolina’s largest lake, Lake Marion, Santee State Park is one of the most popular freshwater fishing destinations in the state. Here you’ll find several different species of fish, including largemouth bass, striped bass, catfish, bream and crappie.

Lake Marion currently holds the record for the biggest largemouth bass ever caught in South Carolina, weighing just over 16 pounds!

There are a number of different places where you can fish in the park. For those staying at one of the pier cabins overlooking the lake, you can cast just a few feet from your front door. Fishing off the pier at Cypress Landing, the park store, is another popular spot, where visitors can fish anytime of the day. And if you don’t already have a fishing license, you can purchase one right inside the visitor center.

If you’re looking to explore the lake and discover your own fishing spot, the park has two boat ramps as well as kayak and canoe rentals. Once you’re on the water, make your way toward the distant trees at the center of the lake. It won’t be long until you’re floating through Lake Marion’s iconic flooded cypress forest. You’re sure to see some fellow fisherman anchored throughout the trees, but the forest is so big that you’ll have no trouble finding your own hot spot.

Night fishing is another popular activity at the park, as Lake Marion is known for having an abundant population of large catfish. Catfish are active during all hours of the day, but fishing at night will increase your chances of catching one. Just be sure to prepare everything beforehand and bring a reliable source of light with you.
