A long bypass river channel stretches over 2 miles, offering a meandering journey filled with Class II and III rapids, perfect for both novice and experienced paddlers.

Welcome to Great Falls, a scenic little town nestled along the banks of the picturesque Catawba River. But there's more to Great Falls than tranquil beauty. A vibrant transformation is underway, breathing new life into the community through the wonders of outdoor recreation.

For nearly a decade, Duke Energy has embarked on an ambitious project to enhance the recreational opportunities and natural environment of the Great Falls Reservoir. This endeavor, which came to fruition in the spring of 2023, has created an idyllic haven for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Here, two whitewater runs await kayakers, canoeists and rafting enthusiasts. A long bypass river channel stretches over 2 miles, offering a meandering journey filled with Class II and III rapids, perfect for both novice and experienced paddlers. The run can be accessed from the Nitrolee Access Area and is open to the public during scheduled flow releases.

A short bypass farther south beckons with its thrilling drops and fast-flowing waters, creating bigger and more challenging Class III and IV rapids. This section of river can be accessed from the Great Falls canoe/kayak trail on Mountain Island.

The Great Falls enhancement project is more than just an investment in adventure—it's a commitment to environmental conservation and habitat restoration.

By returning water to two river channels that were left dry during the construction of the Great Falls Hydro Station in 1907, Duke Energy has revitalized aquatic ecosystems, creating a thriving habitat for fish and wildlife. The project's design, featuring energy dissipation pools and self-rescue features, ensures not only an exhilarating experience for paddlers but also their safety.

In coming years, the allure of Great Falls Reservoir will go beyond its whitewater channels. Visitors will be able to take advantage of new hiking trails and explore the fascinating ruins of the 19th-century Mount Dearborn Armory and Arsenal, a vestige of America's early days, nestled on Dearborn Island.

This historic island will be home to a state park later this decade, which will be accessible via a pedestrian bridge connecting to Great Falls. There also are plans to add two additional canoe/kayak access areas to the reservoir.

Great Falls Reservoir stands as a transformed destination, ready to welcome visitors seeking an escape into nature's embrace.

Those wishing to enjoy these recreational opportunities should view scheduled recreation flow releases. Recreational releases are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is important to note that water will rise quickly in the bypass channel.
