South Carolina's Sallie Dent Porth makes herbal fruit jams

Sweet things just keep coming Sallie Dent Porth's way.

The latest is that her Sallie's Greatest Herbal Fruit Jams, which she makes in Cameron, are among Oprah's Favorite Things for 2012. Sallie's Greatest trio jam pack is among 50 items Oprah Winfrey featured in the December issue of "O" magazine.

Here's what Oprah had to say about the jams: "I love a good scone with jam, but thanks to savory herbs, these spreads are wonderful in a panini, with goat cheese, even as a glaze on ham or Cornish hens. The peach, pepper and ginger is my favorite."

The Favorite Trio includes three 9.5-ounce jars: strawberry and basil; blueberry and lavender; and peach pepper and ginger for $36.

But if you prefer other flavors, you can pick from a number of jam packs or create your own trio. Sallie's Greatest offers eight yummy flavors usually, but for a limited time, Porth is also making blackberry spice and sage jam. She recommends serving it on top of warm baked brie cheese or mixing it with red wine to go on a grilled pork chop.

All flavors feature locally grown fruits and herbs.

Porth moved back to her hometown in 2004 after spending years traveling with her career in medical sales and business development. She began making jam as a hobby, and her friends liked it so much, they encouraged her to go into business.

About the same time she launched her business in late 2010, Garden & Gun magazine named her a Made in the South award winner. The calls and orders poured in.

When Porth isn't making jam, she's involved as president elect of the S.C. Specialty Food Association, getting the word out about great foods make in South Carolina.

Last year, I put together some food baskets as Christmas gifts and slipped in a couple of jars of Sallie's Greatest jams. They were a big hit.

You can buy the jams at 302 Artisans at 302 Senate St., Columbia, which is a S.C. Specialty Food Association store, at Whole Foods and at many shops around the state.

You also can go online to order and to check out her recipes.
