Need a little break from your beach vacation on Hilton Head Island? Drive out to Sergeant Jasper Park in Hardeeville for some crowd-free down time.

The 321-acre park features four short nature trails, several fishing lakes, a picnic shelter, children's playground, an 18-hole disc golf course and plenty of space to get away and chill.

Named after an American Revolution patriot, the park has a rich history dating back to the conflicts between the Cusabo Indians in the 17th century. During the Civil War, the land was the site of a battle where Union troops trampled the Confederates after their seizure of Savannah, Ga.

On a recent visit to Hilton Head Island, I spent an afternoon at the park walking two of the nature trails that circumnavigate lakes. The quiet, flat paths offer more than just mind-clearing tranquility. They take you into the heart of the pine wetlands where you can observe waterfowl and migratory birds.

For another perspective, try paddling the lake near the Outfitter's Cabin. Canoe and kayak rentals are available for $10 per person for up to two hours.

If you want to fish in one of the lakes, you can pick up a fishing pass for $5 for adults, $2 for children 7 to 12. (Seniors and kids younger than 6 are free.)

The park also features an outstanding golf disc course that takes you far into the forest. If you forgot to pack your discs, you can rent them for $2 a disc. Score sheet are available in the activity center.

Located just off I-95 at Exit 8, Sergeant Jasper Park also serves as the perfect cure for white line fever. Take a break from your road trip to stretch your legs, have a picnic lunch or enjoy a friendly game of disc golf. It will do wonders for your psyche.
