Pendleton is an Upstate jewel box, diminutive but packed with gems. Situated at the northeast tip of Lake Hartwell, it encompasses nearly 4 square miles. That size seems far more impressive when you consider every inch of it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

And the same holds true when it comes to restaurants. For a small town, Pendleton’s dining scene is surprisingly robust. Here are three chef-driven establishments that could handily hold their own in bigger South Carolina cities.

Ruffage

Fresh tarragon shrimp salad, creamy brie and crisp applewood bacon make for a dreamy sandwich at Ruffage.
