After hosting three highly successful PGA TOUR events—including the 2021 PGA Championship—South Carolina has solidified its reputation as one of the nation’s top destinations for world-class golf. From annual tour stops to major championships, the Palmetto State’s iconic courses attract legends of the game, rising stars and fans from around the world.
Here are some of the notable golf events that have taken place in South Carolina.
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Kiawah Island | Public
2012 & 2021 PGA Championship, 1991 Ryder Cup
One of the nation’s toughest courses, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island was designed by legendary architect Pete Dye specifically to host the 1991 Ryder Cup, famously dubbed the “War by the Shore.”
Since then, The Ocean Course has become only the fourth course to host each of the PGA of America’s major championships: the Ryder Cup, the Senior PGA Championship and the PGA Championship—most recently in 2021.
The Ocean Course weaves through natural dunes, sea oats and marshland, providing unobstructed views of Kiawah’s breathtaking coastline from every hole. It also features the most seaside holes of any golf course in the Northern Hemisphere and is recognized as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
Congaree Golf Club, Ridgeland | Private
Palmetto Championship at Congaree | June 7 – 13, 2021
The Palmetto Championship at Congaree was held as a substitute for the canceled 2021 RBC Canadian Open due to the COVID-19 pandemic. South African rising star Garrick Higgo impressed everyone by winning in only his second start on the PGA TOUR.
Designed by acclaimed architect Tom Fazio, Congaree Golf Club is set on a historic Lowcountry estate and is known for its wide fairways, bold bunkering and natural beauty. With ancient live oaks, sweeping sandscapes and a layout reminiscent of Australia’s famed Sandbelt, it is ranked No. 40 on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Courses.
Arnold Palmer Cup | June 5 – 7, 2025
Another great event held at Congaree Golf Club was the Arnold Palmer Cup in June 2025. This unique tournament is the only major competition where men and women compete side-by-side as partners. The Arnold Palmer Cup has taken place at some of the world’s most prestigious courses, including The Old Course, Baltusrol, Royal Portrush and Cherry Hills. Similar to the Ryder Cup, this tournament features the top men’s and women’s collegiate golfers, with a U.S. team competing against an international team.
The CJ Cup in South Carolina | October 17 – 23, 2022
First launched in 2017 as South Korea’s first official PGA TOUR tournament, The CJ CUP in South Carolina took place at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland. The 78-man field included five players designated by the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA) and the top three available players of Korean nationality from the Official World Golf Ranking.
Barefoot Resort & Golf – Dye Course, North Myrtle Beach | Semi-Private
LPGA Amateurs Team Championship | June 13 – 14, 2025
The 2025 LPGA Amateurs Team Championship was held on June 13 – 14 at The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort & Golf in North Myrtle Beach. Known for its bold design and challenging layout, The Dye Course has long been a stage for memorable events, including Darius Rucker’s celebrated Monday After the Masters tournament. Its mix of rolling terrain, natural dunes and water hazards creates a test that rewards precision—and provides a stunning backdrop for championship play.
