The arched hallway in The George’s lobby features a lush forest mural.
When the former site of the Georgetown Times re-emerged as the site of The George Hotel in 2024, it rightfully made headlines. After all, there hasn’t been a hotel on Georgetown’s Front Street since The Gladstone was demolished in 1967.
Now, visitors to South Carolina’s third oldest city can enjoy modern boutique lodgings steeped in stylishness and history. Here, contemporary comfort is infused with reminders of Georgetown’s maritime past to create a stunning hotel concept.
A visit to the Hammock Coast is more appealing than ever with the addition of The George to the town’s vibrant landscape.
Here's everything you need to know before you go.
The Location
The George captures the vintage feel of Georgetown’s historic Front Street.
The George, located at 615 Front Street, is situated on Winyah Bay just steps from the Harborwalk Marina and in the heart of Georgetown’s quaint shopping district.
Parking
Use the adjacent lot or on-street parking. You can also boat in and reserve a slip at the Harborwalk Marina.
The Space
Rich colors, vintage prints, and European furnishings give The George a warm, luxurious atmosphere.
Developed by Winyah Hospitality and operated by the Indigo Road Hospitality Group, the hotel features 56 guestrooms and suites, an on-site restaurant, a bar and private event space. On the back side of the hotel, there is a lovely green space with an outdoor bar and firepit—perfect for weddings and other events. Have a drink, kick back and watch the boats.
Design and Style
Whimsical art and natural appointments give The George a fun, refined feel.
The handsome facade blends naturally with the 18th- and 19th-century buildings of the town’s quaint shopping district. From the lobby to the public spaces to the guestrooms, the appointments reflect an understated but refined coastal elegance. Vintage patterned fabrics, mural wallpaper, European accents and local artwork come together with maritime hints of times past to create a vibe that is both whimsical and sublime.
The Rooms
Whimsical art and natural appointments give The George a fun, refined feel.
Of the 56 guestrooms, 42 overlook the Winyah Bay. Open the draperies and drink in the views with your morning coffee. Amenities include custom-crafted mattresses, robes, Bellino fine linens and towels, Malin & Goetz bath products, a clothes steamer and beverage station with coffee and gourmet teas. These guest rooms are designed for relaxing and lingering.
Dining
Eliza’s dockside bar at The George overlooks the Harborwalk Marina.
The on-site restaurant, The Independent, was named for the former seafood market that operated on Front Street for more than eight decades. Seafood dishes and seasonal Southern-inspired cuisine are specialties. Reservations are suggested for dinner and weekend brunch. Notable temptations: crab dip, berry salad, crispy Brussels sprouts, fresh catch of the day, creme brulee.
Sips and Nibbles
The dockside bar, Eliza’s, pays homage to Elizabeth Lucas Pinckney, who established indigo as a major cash crop. (Look for nods to her legacy in the artwork throughout the property.) Order your favorite cocktails and something yummy from the bar menu. Note: Open weather permitting.
Add-ons
A seating area on the first floor features a portrait of Elizabeth “Eliza” Lucas Pinckney.
Have a bottle of wine waiting for you at check-in, request a golf or dinner package, arrange a picnic and more. Check out the latest offerings here.
