Shadowy alleys, secluded gardens, clandestine courtyards—Charleston has always been a city of secrets. But the uncloaking of mysteries also extends to where to cozy up for cocktails. You can listen for the whisperings about hidden bars or follow these clues to discover three speakeasies that keep a sense of mystery alive in the Holy City.
Hunt These Hidden Speakeasies in Charleston
472 Meeting Street
Sleuthing: Last Saint is a legit cocktail bar known for inventive, hand-crafted drinks. But if you navigate your way to the very back of the bar, you will find a bright yellow door. Ring the bell and follow the guide beyond the velvet curtain. You are now in the Annex.
The Aura: The small, dimly lit cocktail lounge has a friendly, laid-back vibe. There are no menus here. Name your choice of liquor and add a few descriptives (fruity, sour, warm, smoky, etc.) and the bartender will concoct the perfect drink for you.
Insights: Annex serves patrons Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Walk-ins are welcome but reservations are strongly recommended to secure a seat.
Scotty Doesn’t Know Speakeasy
251 E Bay Street
Sleuthing: Step inside the custard shop next door to Big John’s Tavern. There will be a clerk near the freezer door toward the back. Ask for entry, and you will be shown the way in.
The Aura: Vintage furnishings, candles, gilt mirrors and shimmering chandeliers create a sophisticated, intimate feel. Delight in bubbles, classic cocktails, sweets and hors d’oeuvres at this Prohibition era-esque bar named for the provocative song by indie-punk band, Lustra.
Insights: Guests are welcomed Wednesday through Saturday evening. When you’re ready for another cocktail, simply press the button on the wall near your seat. Reservations are highly suggested as there is limited seating capacity.
Bar Vauté

1 Broad Street
Sleuthing: Head to the corner of Broad and East Bay. Enter the restaurant, Brasserie La Banque. Ask to be directed to the historic building’s original staircase and descend to the below-street-level bar.
The Aura: The 1700’s aesthetic of the building is well-preserved in Bar Vauté, a dark, cozy space that invites intimate conversation and lingering over dinner and drinks. Like the Brasserie, the menu features French-influenced dishes and a caviar flight. The cocktails are sublime and thoughtfully crafted by their skilled mixologists.
Insights: Open seven nights a week. The “Apéro Hour” (which is actually two hours) features a special drink and dinner menu that draws an early crowd from 4 to 6 p.m. weeknights. No reservations accepted.
