Charleston’s reputation for out-of-this-world dining is not exactly classified info. But here’s a juicy secret sure to send gastronauts into orbit: the City of North Charleston is steadily growing into a food force to contend with.

LoLA

On the menu: Another offspring of Shuai and Corrie Wang, King BBQ gives a nod to Chinatown and South Carolina barbecue traditions. Dishes like Chinese barbecued spareribs, moo shu chopped smoked pork, a fried smokey chicken sandwich and smoked duck with steamed bao buns all deliver a pleasing punch to the palate.

Sidenote: Belly up to the ornate bar during Golden Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday for incredible snacks and “trashy-fancy” cocktails.

On the menu: It’s breakfast all day long at this headquarters for buttery biscuits and gravy and a novelty called the “Buzzed Doughnut”—a biscuit “doughnut” loaded with coffee-rubbed bacon and scrambled eggs served with a mocha dip over hashed browns. Mexican hash and cactus pork tacos are other menu stars. Lunch offerings include tacos, sammies and salads.

EVO Pizzeria

Salads are savory and satisfying, too.
