South Carolina’s race calendar isn’t just about the finish line—it’s about fun, flair and community spirit. From dogs in costume to glow-in-the-dark 5Ks, these events turn fitness into full-on entertainment while raising money for local causes.
In April, head to Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet for the Gator Gauntlet 5K, a scenic beachside run (or walk) where silly costumes are highly encouraged. It's perfect for kids, beginners and four-legged companions.
Meanwhile, Columbia gets galactic with May’s May the Fourth Be With You 5K, where Star Wars fans sprint (or stroll) in their finest Jedi robes, Wookiee fur or stormtrooper gear. Awards are given for creativity and character commitment, followed by a themed concert from the South Carolina Philharmonic.
Come Halloween time, you’ll find themed races galore. Dress up for Hobblin Goblin 5K at Little Pee Dee State Park in Dillon, where runners, walkers and even dogs hit a mostly paved course in costume for prizes at this timed yet go-at-your-own-pace race. In Conway—the “City of Halloween”—the Halloween Hustle offers a 10K, 5K and 1-mile run (or all three), with finishers earning a glow-in-the-dark medal. Wear your best costumes for Aiken’s Trailblazer Halloween Half Marathon & Races at Stable View, where you can run the Headless Horseman Half, a Thriller 10K or the Frightening 5K with optional steeplechase jumps.
Also in the fall, Charleston’s Glow Run lights up the night with neon vibes and powder-filled fun. Runners and walkers begin in plain white or black tees and finish glowing under black lights and dancing to live DJs at an electrified after-party.
